Tricked into Stalinist Russia to look for her daughter, actress Marija Leiko learns that she died during childbirth. Holding a motherless baby in her arms, Maria receives a job offer in a Soviet theater and decides to stay for one season. However, the regime's secrets and terrible repressions are gradually penetrating the idealized world of the actress. She is forced to choose between fame and love for her granddaughter, between her beliefs and a totalitarian regime steeped in lies.
